The West
Cumbria
Railway Modellers were formed in 1999 by a group of model railway
enthusiasts. Some were members of a
former club in Workington while others were new to the club
scene. The original name of the group was the Workington Model Railway
Group. They used a spare office on an industrial
estate in Workington that was surplus to the use of the occupier of the
premises. He was a founder member of the
group. When he closed down his taxi business, the group was
left with no where to meet. As there were no suitable premises to be
found at a realistic rent, the
membership began to dwindle. The Committee decided not to wind up the
group but leave the modelling section of the group in stasis. The group
has a two tier organisation. The top tier is still known as the
Workington Model Railway Group (WMR Group) and concentrates on the
commercial aspects of the group. The lower tier changed their name to a
less formal one to seperate the modelling section from the business
section.
Three members of the modelling section are now
planning a new 00 gauge layout based on Conwy in North Wales. The time
period will be set in the 1930s and 40s, therefore the there will be a
predominance of London Midland & Scottish Railway rolling stock.
The project leader is Tom Jenkins who is also a member of the Maryport
Model
Club and hopes to use one of the unused rooms above the clubrooms at
Maryport to start work on the
layout. In the 1980s Tom built an N gauge model railway layout
depicting Bangor
Station and also Conway station yard, the Castle and the tubular bridge
over
the River Conwy. Having already done the research into Conway, Tom can
use his info to help produce a new layout in 4mm scale.
